Source of Kennebec River Oil Spill Identified
The Sappi paper mill in Skowhegan was identified as the source of April’s oil spill in the Kennebec River. A Sappi spokesperson initially denied the spill came from the mill, but a forensic investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard matched the spilled fuel to the facility.
“All oil has its own fingerprint, so to speak, of where it’s been, how it’s made, where it comes from,” said Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Blake Maurer.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is working with federal regulators on possible enforcement actions. The mill’s fuel storage is also being investigated.

Wildfire Smoke Enters Maine
A smoke plume from wildfires in western Ontario has drifted to cover a large area from the Midwest through the Northeast.
In recent years, wildfire smoke has become an increasingly common part of Maine summers as larger and more frequent wildfires burn across Canada. While much of the smoke remained high in the atmosphere, northern Maine experienced elevated levels of fine particle pollution, prompting the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to issue an air quality alert.
The Department of Environmental Protection recommends that sensitive people should consider reducing exertion and watch for symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath.

Maine’s Low Income Assistance Program Expanded
The Maine Public Utilities Commission approved $40.5 million for Maine's Low Income Assistance Program (LIAP), nearly doubling the program's funding to prepare for a significant increase in enrollment.
The funding comes from three sources: $7.5 million approved by the Maine Legislature, $1.25 million from the New England Clean Energy Connect Low Income Customer Benefits Fund, and $31.75 million paid through electric utility bills.
Maine Public Advocate Heather Sanborn said relying more on state tax dollars, rather than utility ratepayer fees, would be a fairer way to fund the program because it places more of the cost on those with higher incomes instead of increasing electricity bills for all customers.

More Than 1,000 Mainers Rally in Portland
More than 1,000 people gathered in Portland's Monument Square on Saturday, July 18th, to protest recent federal immigration enforcement actions following the fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián in Biddeford on July 13th.
Demonstrators called for justice, accountability, and an end to aggressive immigration enforcement, with many carrying signs in support of immigrant communities and chanting against deportations.
The rally remained peaceful and was one of the largest demonstrations in Maine since the shooting, reflecting growing public concern over the incident and broader federal immigration policies.
