A Quick Guide to Calling Your Representatives
1. Choose an Issue You Care About
2. Find Your Representatives
Find Your National Legislators
Find your Maine Senators and Maine Representatives.
3. Make Your Calls
It can be scary to start calling your representatives about policies. But keep in mind that, no matter which party they work for, the staffers who pick up the phone aren’t looking to challenge you.
Tips
- Keep your calls short - they should take less than a minute.
- Use supporting bill numbers if applicable so the staffer can easily tally your call.
- Be respectful. Your call may not be counted if you speak to the staffer in a combative or threatening way.
- If you have a compelling story of how a policy affects you or your loved ones, share it!
- If you really hate talking on the phone, you can leave a voicemail! Calling on evenings and weekends with the intent of leaving a voicemail is still a great way to make your voice heard.
A great resource is the 5Calls App. The app has all the information you need to make calls in support of progressive issues. The app provides a list of issues with call scripts and tells you who to call for your chosen issue, from Representatives and Senators to Governors and Attorneys General.
