Our Structure

There are four ways that individuals, groups, and organizations can engage with the Maine Youth for Climate Justice coalition…

Core

MYCJ's Core coalition group includes 1-2 representatives from active organizations, school clubs, and local groups, in addition to a representative from each of MYCJ's cohorts and working groups. Organizations, clubs, and groups involved as general members in MYCJ can choose if they want representatives in Core or not. Read more about our youth representatives below.

Core Members

General Membership

Any youth who has joined MYCJ’s Slack workspace is considered a general member. Members are invited to monthly “Teach-In” calls over Zoom, community building events, they can join any MYCJ cohort or active campaign, and are asked to help set our legislative priorities as well as help make other decisions. In addition to the communication platform that the Slack workspace provides, it is also where members post about local, statewide and national climate justice opportunities (jobs, internships, workshops, etc.), as well as climate justice advocacy events and calls to action (art builds, rallies, lobbying days, etc).

Partnership Work

If you or your group would like to be involved with Core, but don’t have the capacity to participate regularly, please email us. We have a Core partnership program available for groups who aren’t able to regularly participate. This involves an MYCJ Core member being designated as a point partner to a group. They regularly check in with the group they are connected with, hear their input on MYCJ policies or decisions, and keep Core updated on the group’s actions, events, and/or needs. MYCJ will then support the group and collaborate with them in ways that aim to be non-transactional and non-tokenizing. We are proudly partnered with Maine Immigrant’s Rights Coalition and Signature Soul.

Intergenerational Coalition Work

MYCJ is a founding member of and is fiscally sponsored by the intergenerational coalition Maine Climate Action Now (MCAN). We consider MCAN and its member organizations to be MYCJ’s adult allies. MYCJ is also a member of the Wabanaki Alliance Tribal Coalition, Maine Food Convergence, Mainers for Offshore Wind, New England for Offshore Wind, Renew Maine, Renew New England Youth Coalition, Our Power Maine, Power Shift Network, and other legislative coalitions.
